As your child begins teething, it is possible for your child to develop a condition called baby bottle tooth decay, or Early Childhood Caries (ECC). If left untreated, this condition can become a serious issue that can negatively affect the oral health of both primary and permanent teeth. ECC often occurs when your child’s teeth are exposed to liquids that contain sugar for a lengthened period. This includes milk (including breast milk), formula, fruit juice, and other sweetened beverages. Our office is happy to care for your child and help you learn how to avoid baby bottle tooth decay in Phoenix, Arizona.
Many parents ask how they can help to prevent ECC. To do this, our dentist recommends the following:
- For infants, use a wet gauze or clean washcloth to wipe the plaque from teeth and gums. Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle filled with anything other than water.
- For adolescent children, have them brush their teeth at least twice a day, and control the number of sugary snacks they have throughout the day.
- As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, routine dental visits shoud begin when your child receive their first tooth, or by their first birthday, and continue every six to help ensure that they maintain a healthy smile for life.
