Many people may not be aware that proper oral healthcare habits begin even before their child’s teeth erupt. We ask that parents take the time to clean their child’s gums after feedings by swabbing with a damp, warm washcloth. When your child’s first tooth arrives, you may start using a children’s toothbrush. Our dentist, Dr. Angel, recommends using a toothbrush that has soft bristles and a small head, which you can normally find at a drugstore.
Other ways in which parents can help prepare their child for a lifetime of healthy teeth include:
- Visiting the dentist by their first birthday. This helps parents learn more about how to help their child establish healthy dental routines, and it allows our dentist to ensure they your child’s teeth are developing correctly.
- As your child grows older, we ask that parents refrain from using words like needle, pull, drill, hurt, or any word that could cause unnecessary fear of visiting the “teeth doctor.”
- Set up an expectation of fun when it comes to visiting the dentist. This will give kids something to look forward to for their next visit.
